Dryer not heating in Charleston?Usually the vent or a fuse

The drum turns, the timer counts down, and the towels come out cold. A dryer that runs without heat is one of the most common calls we take from Charleston, and the cause is often a blocked vent that has already opened a thermal fuse. This page walks through the usual suspects, gas and electric, and the checks that are safe to make yourself.

Symptom guide

Why a dryer stops heating

A dryer only heats when three things agree: the motor is turning, air is moving, and the safety devices see a normal temperature. An electric dryer heats through a coiled element on a 240-volt circuit; a gas dryer heats through an igniter, a flame sensor and a pair of coils on the gas valve. Both kinds protect themselves with a thermal fuse that opens for good if the drum gets too hot, and the usual reason it gets too hot is a vent that cannot carry the damp air away. So a dryer that stopped heating is often telling you two stories at once: a part has failed, and the airflow problem that killed it is still there.

Charleston dryers work against long vents and humid air. A stacked pair in a hall closet in Harleston Village or Radcliffeborough often vents through two turns and thirty feet of duct before it reaches daylight under a piazza; a Mount Pleasant or Daniel Island house vents up to a roof cap that fills with lint. From June to September the air entering the dryer is already wet, so every load runs longer and hotter. Salt air near the harbor, on Sullivan’s Island and along the creeks of James Island corrodes igniters, flame sensors and the contacts on thermostats. A dryer in a West Ashley garage or under a raised house lives in dust, which packs the vent faster still.

The usual causes, most to least common

CauseWhat you noticeWhat we do
Blocked vent that opened the thermal fuseLoads took longer and longer for weeks, the top of the dryer ran hot, then one day no heat at all.Clear the vent from the machine to the outside cap, replace the fuse, meter the high-limit thermostat, and measure airflow before we leave.
Heating element open (electric)Drum turns, air moves, never warms; no smell, no noise, just cold air.Meter the element for continuity, replace it, and check the vent so the new one is not cooked the same way.
Gas valve coils failing (gas)Heats for a few minutes, then the flame drops out and the rest of the cycle runs cold.Meter the coils warm and cold, replace the pair, confirm the flame holds through a full timed cycle.
Igniter or flame sensor (gas)Igniter glows but no flame appears, or nothing glows at all and the drum runs cold from the start.Meter the igniter and sensor, replace what failed, and check the burner tube for corrosion from salt air.
Cycling or high-limit thermostatHeat comes and goes unevenly, or the dryer shuts off early with the load still damp.Meter both thermostats at temperature, replace the one out of range, and confirm the drum reaches and holds a normal heat.
Breaker with one leg out (electric)Motor runs normally because it uses one leg, but the element needs both and stays cold.Meter the outlet for 240 volts across both legs and tell you what we find; a wiring or breaker fault goes to an electrician.
Timer, heater relay or control boardHeat never calls even with airflow, element and thermostats all reading fine.Meter the call for heat at the board or timer, replace the failed control, and run a full cycle with a temperature probe.

Safe things to check before you call

  • Run a cycle and hold a hand at the outside vent cap; weak air means a blocked duct.
  • Empty the lint screen and wash it if dryer sheets have left a film on the mesh.
  • Check the breaker box for a dryer breaker sitting halfway; switch it fully off, then on.
  • Pull the dryer forward and look for a crushed or kinked flex duct behind it.
  • Confirm the cycle is not set to air fluff or a no-heat option on the dial.
  • On a gas dryer, confirm the range still lights, so gas is reaching the house.

When to stop and call

Call once the lint screen is clean, the breaker is fully reset and the vent behind the machine is not crushed, and the dryer still runs cold. Call at once if you smell gas, see scorching on the back panel, or hear a loud thump from the drum. Do not run the dryer repeatedly hoping the heat returns; if a fuse opened because of a blocked vent, every cold cycle is still pushing lint into the duct. Hang the laundry on the piazza or the porch rail. Across Charleston the visit is usually next day, and the technician brings fuses, elements, coils and igniters for the common brands.

Questions about this symptom

Why does my Charleston dryer take two cycles when it used to take one?

That is the vent talking. As lint builds up in a long duct, airflow drops, the drum holds damp air, and every load needs more time. In a peninsula closet with two turns to the outside or a roof-vented suburban house, the run is long enough that this happens faster than most owners expect. Left alone, the overheating opens the thermal fuse and the heat stops entirely.

Is it safe to keep using a dryer that runs but does not heat?

It will not damage the motor, but it will not dry anything, and if the vent is the underlying cause you are packing more lint into a duct that already overheated once. A lint-blocked vent is also the leading cause of dryer fires. Stop using it, clear what you can safely reach behind the machine, and book the visit.

Do you clear the dryer vent as part of the repair?

Yes, when the vent is the reason the part failed. Replacing a thermal fuse without clearing the duct that opened it means a return visit within months, so the technician measures airflow at the cap and clears the run from the dryer to the outside as part of the work. That is written into the one number you approve, with the $99 diagnostic inside.

Gas or electric, is one more likely to stop heating in Charleston?

Both fail, but for different reasons. Electric dryers lose the element or the thermal fuse; gas dryers lose the valve coils, the igniter or the flame sensor, and salt air near the harbor and the beaches is hard on all three. The vent problem is shared by both. The technician carries parts for either kind and meters before replacing anything.

How soon can you get to a dryer with no heat?

Usually next day and always inside the week, across the peninsula, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, James Island, North Charleston and Daniel Island. A dryer is not the emergency a warm refrigerator is, but a household of wet laundry in August is not something we let sit either. Rentals and inns on turnover days get a window that fits the checkout.
