Dryer repair from the peninsula out
Downtown, a dryer usually sits on top of a washer in a closet off the hall, and its vent may travel twenty feet through the wall of a house built before anyone dried clothes by machine. In West Ashley and James Island the pair is in the garage with a short run to the outside wall; in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island and Summerville it is in a laundry room with a vent that goes up through the roof. Those runs matter, because a dryer with restricted airflow overheats and trips its thermal fuse, and no amount of new parts fixes a clogged vent. We check airflow on every dryer call, from Ansonborough to Cane Bay.
The first cool morning of the year is when the phone rings. A gas dryer in a Wagener Terrace closet that ran fine all summer glows, clicks and goes cold: the igniter has weakened to the point it never draws enough current to open the gas valve, a wear pattern that harbor humidity speeds along. An electric unit in a Park Circle garage that heats for ten minutes and quits is usually a cycling thermostat or a heating element with a broken coil arcing against the housing. Both are same-visit repairs with the right part on the van.
Dryer failures we see around Charleston
- Drum turns, air stays cold
- Two full cycles to dry a load
- Squeal or thump on every rotation
- Hot smell of scorched lint
- Shuts off after a few minutes
- Gas dryer glows, clicks, goes cold
- Drum will not turn at all
- Clothes hot but still damp
Reading the symptom
Runs, no heat
On an electric dryer it is the heating element, the thermal fuse or the high-limit thermostat; on gas it is the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. We meter each in turn, and we check the vent, because a blown thermal fuse is almost always the symptom of restricted airflow rather than the disease.
Takes two cycles
Lint in the vent, a blower wheel packed with fluff or a moisture sensor coated in dryer-sheet residue. The dryer cannot move enough air to carry moisture out. We clear the blower housing, gauge the vent run and clean the sensor bars; a crushed or disconnected vent behind the machine is a common find on the peninsula.
Squeal or thump
Drum rollers that have gone flat, an idler pulley with a dry bearing, or drum glides worn through to the metal. Near the harbor the roller shafts corrode and seize. We replace rollers and the idler as a set, along with the belt while the drum is out, so the noise does not come back in a month.
Stops after a few minutes
A motor overheating on a seized bearing, a thermostat cycling the whole machine rather than just the heat, or a control board losing its mind after a hurricane-season surge. We meter the motor windings and the thermostats and confirm the board before condemning it.
Drum will not turn
A snapped belt is the usual answer, and it is a same-visit fix. A motor that hums without turning or a broken belt switch are the other candidates. We open the cabinet, replace the belt or motor and reset the tension, then run the drum empty to check tracking.
Burning smell
Lint has reached the heating element or the burner and is smoldering. Stop the dryer and pull the plug. We strip the lint from the element housing, blower and cabinet floor, check the element and the vent, and do not return the machine to service until the airflow is right.
How dryer repair runs with us
The visit starts with a question about the vent: where it goes and when it was last cleared. Then the technician meters the heat circuit, from the thermal fuse and thermostats to the element or igniter, and measures airflow at the exhaust. That combination finds the fault and its cause, so the repair lasts. The failed part is named in plain words, one number is written, and if you approve it the work happens from the van, usually within the hour. A part on order means a scheduled return with no second trip fee. Every dryer leaves us with a full heat cycle tested, the lint cleaned out of the cabinet and a written warranty.
Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, GE, Electrolux, Frigidaire, Kenmore, Bosch, Miele and Fisher & Paykel dryers, gas and electric, stacked and side by side, are daily work, and most of their common parts ride on the van. Property managers with turnover days in the French Quarter or on Isle of Palms get a window that fits the cleaners, lockbox and gate-code access, approval by text and the invoice by email. Approve the written number and the $99 diagnostic is already part of it; decline and $99 is all you pay. Pricing follows the diagnostic, on paper.
Dryer Repair questions from Charleston & the Lowcountry
Do you do same-day dryer repair in Charleston?
Same-day is common for a dryer with no heat when you call before noon on a weekday, particularly on the peninsula, in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and James Island. Farther out, next day is typical. We are open Monday to Saturday and confirm the window by text before the van leaves Laurens Street.
Why does salt air matter to a dryer in the Lowcountry?
Harbor humidity carries salt into the laundry closet, and salt attacks the igniter’s silicon carbide surface, the contacts on door switches and the steel shafts of the drum rollers. Dryers on Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach and the lower peninsula wear those parts faster than one in Summerville does.
Will you clean the dryer vent as part of the repair?
We clear the blower housing, the cabinet and the vent connection behind the dryer on every heat-related call, and we gauge the run to the outside. A long run through a peninsula wall or up through a Mount Pleasant roof that needs a full clean-out is something we will tell you about plainly rather than leave to trip the next fuse.
Is a gas dryer that clicks but never lights dangerous?
Not in the way people fear: the gas valve stays closed unless the igniter proves hot, which is why you get clicking and cold air rather than gas. It does mean the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils need metering. Turn the dryer off and book a visit; it is a routine repair from the van.
How is the price for a dryer repair decided?
After the technician has seen the machine, never before. You get the failed part named and one written number that already includes the $99 diagnostic. Approve it and the repair proceeds; decline it and $99 is the whole bill. We do not quote repairs over the phone because a guess costs you more than a meter does.
