Why a refrigerator stops cooling
A refrigerator makes cold by moving heat: the compressor pushes refrigerant through the evaporator inside the freezer, where a fan blows air across it, and out to the condenser underneath or behind the cabinet, where another fan pushes that heat into the room. Break any link in that chain and the shelves warm up. A condenser coil felted with dust cannot dump heat, so the compressor runs hot and cycles off on its overload. An evaporator fan that quits leaves the freezer cold and the fridge warm. A defrost system that fails lets ice bury the coil over a week until no air can pass. And a start relay or a control board can stop asking the compressor to run.
Charleston adds its own pressures. From June to September a refrigerator in a carriage house in Ansonborough, a garage in West Ashley or under a raised house on James Island works in air near 100 degrees, and the condenser has nothing cool to breathe. Hurricane-season surges and outages take out control boards and the inverter boards on newer French-door and built-in units, from Daniel Island to Mount Pleasant. Salt air near the harbor corrodes fan motor windings and connectors. And on the peninsula, a king tide that puts an inch of water on a ground floor can wet the compressor compartment, which is why a machine that took water gets a meter before anyone guesses at its future.
The usual causes, most to least common
| Cause | What you notice | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair | Runs almost without stopping, sides of the cabinet warm, both compartments slowly losing ground. | Clean the coil, meter the compressor draw and the condenser fan, confirm the cabinet pulls down to temperature before we leave. |
| Condenser fan motor seized | Compressor hot to the touch, a click every few minutes as the overload trips, warm fridge and a soft freezer. | Replace the fan motor from the van, check the overload and start relay for heat damage, verify airflow across the coil. |
| Evaporator fan failed | Freezer cold, fridge warm, no faint whir behind the freezer wall when the door switch is pressed. | Meter the fan motor and its feed, replace the motor, confirm cold air reaches the fresh-food section within the hour. |
| Defrost system failure | A sheet of frost on the freezer back wall, cooling that fades over several days then returns after a thaw. | Meter the defrost heater, thermostat and control, replace the failed part, thaw the coil fully and test a defrost cycle. |
| Start relay or overload gone | A hum for a few seconds, then a click, repeated every two to five minutes; nothing gets cold. | Meter the relay and the compressor windings, replace the relay and overload, confirm the compressor starts and holds. |
| Control or inverter board damaged by a surge | Dead or scrambled display, compressor never called, often the morning after a storm or an outage. | Meter the board outputs and the compressor, replace the board, and check the surge did not reach the fans as well. |
| Sealed-system or compressor fault | Compressor runs and runs, everything warm, the evaporator barely cold or frosting in one small patch. | Confirm it with gauges and a meter, then tell you plainly whether a repair makes sense before any number is written. |
Safe things to check before you call
- Feel the freezer first: a cold freezer with a warm fridge points to a fan or defrost fault.
- Listen for a hum then a click every few minutes; that is the start relay giving up.
- Pull the cabinet a hand’s width from the wall so the condenser can breathe.
- Look for a sheet of frost on the freezer back wall; that means defrost trouble.
- Plug a lamp into the outlet to confirm it is live, and press any GFCI reset nearby.
- Move a bag of ice into the fridge section and keep both doors shut while you wait.
When to stop and call
Call when the fridge section is above 40 degrees and not recovering, when the compressor is hot and clicking, when the display is dead, or when the machine stood in tidal water. Do not keep opening the door to check; every opening costs cold you cannot get back. Move milk, meat and leftovers to a cooler with ice, pack the freezer tight so the frozen mass holds itself, and leave the rest alone. A warm refrigerator gets a same-day window on most weekdays from the peninsula, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and James Island, and the technician arrives with the common fan motors, relays and boards on the van.
Questions about this symptom
How long will food last in a refrigerator that stopped cooling?
A closed refrigerator holds a safe temperature for about four hours; a full freezer holds for roughly two days, a half-full one for about one. Those figures shrink fast in a Charleston summer, especially in a garage or carriage house. If the fridge has been above 40 degrees for more than a few hours, discard meat, dairy and leftovers rather than gamble on them.
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that stopped cooling, or should I replace it?
Most cooling failures are a fan, a relay, a defrost part or a board, and those are sound repairs on a cabinet with years left in it. The exception is a failed compressor or a leak in the sealed system on an older unit. The technician tells you which it is at the door, and the $99 diagnostic is the whole cost if you decide not to go ahead.
My refrigerator went warm after a storm knocked the power out in Charleston. What failed?
Most often a control board or, on newer inverter units, the inverter board itself. A surge on the way out or the way back in can damage either. Sometimes the compressor start relay is the casualty instead. The technician meters each in turn, so you hear the actual failed part named before any repair number is written.
Why is my freezer fine but the fridge section warm?
Because the cold is made in the freezer and moved into the fridge by a fan through a damper. If the evaporator fan has failed, or the evaporator coil is buried in ice from a defrost fault, or the damper has stuck closed, the freezer stays cold and the fridge does not. That is the most common pattern we see across Charleston and one of the quickest to repair.
Can you come the same day for a refrigerator that is not cooling?
On most weekdays, yes, across the peninsula and the areas within fifteen minutes of Laurens Street, and usually next morning at the far end of the map. Call before noon for the likeliest same-day slot. We work six days a week, so a Saturday warm fridge gets a Saturday visit when the schedule allows, and the $99 diagnostic is already part of the repair price you approve.
