Range and oven repair on the peninsula
The kitchens on the lower peninsula were often not kitchens to begin with. A dependency behind a Tradd Street single house, a carriage house off a Legare Street gate, a former warehouse floor in the French Quarter: these now hold Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Miele ranges that were carried in through the piazza. Farther up, Radcliffeborough, Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park kitchens run thirty-inch GE Café, KitchenAid and Bosch ranges, and the student rentals along Calhoun and Spring Streets cook on Whirlpool and Frigidaire electric ranges that see hard use. From Laurens Street, all of it is minutes away and the technician handles the parking.
Gas dominates below Calhoun Street, and gas igniters dislike the harbor. Salt in the air pits the surface of a spark electrode until it fouls, and an oven igniter that glowed happily for years weakens until it can no longer draw enough current to open the safety valve, so the oven waits and the cook waits with it. Inns in the French Quarter feel this first because their ovens run every morning. Electric ranges fail with a flash from the bake element or a temperature sensor drifting so a cake burns on one side. And after a hurricane-season flicker, a control board sometimes never comes back.
Range and oven failures we see on the peninsula
- Oven slow to light in the carriage house
- Burner clicking on the pro range
- Bake element glowing at one corner
- Wall oven stalls below temperature
- Door will not release after self-clean
- Error code after a power flicker
- Convection fan silent, cakes uneven
- Cooktop dead, oven still fine
Symptom, cause and what we do
Oven stays cold
On a gas oven the igniter has weakened below the current the valve requires; on electric the bake element has opened or the relay board no longer feeds it. We meter the circuit, replace the igniter or element from the van and stay until the oven climbs to temperature and holds it against an independent thermometer.
Burner clicks, no flame
An electrode fouled by salt and grease, a spark module firing all burners, a wet burner switch after a scrub, or a cap set off-center. We clean and gap the electrodes, test the module and switches and replace the failed piece. Knobs-off clicking means moisture in a switch, common in a piazza-side kitchen.
Uneven baking
A stalled convection fan, a sensor drifting out of range, or a door gasket letting heat escape one side. We compare the sensor’s resistance to a thermometer, meter the fan and inspect gasket and hinges. Pro-style ovens with two fans get both checked, and calibration is adjusted before we leave.
A code on the display
F-codes name a sensor, latch, keypad or board. We test the part the code points at rather than trusting it outright, and we look for the relay stuck after a surge. Boards for Wolf, Thermador and Miele are ordered against the serial number, with the return visit booked and no second trip fee.
Door stuck or will not lock
A self-clean latch motor stalled mid-cycle, a hinge that has broken and stopped the switch closing, or a lock switch reading wrong. We unlock the door without force, meter the latch and fit a new motor or hinge. Heavy pro-range doors get both hinges checked while the door is off.
Wall oven dead
A double-pole breaker half-tripped kills the oven and leaves the clock alive, so we check the panel first. Then incoming voltage, the thermal cutout and the main board. On built-in wall ovens in South of Broad and Ansonborough cabinetry we know how to pull the unit without marking the surround.
How range and oven repair runs downtown
The visit begins at the panel and the gas shutoff, then the range. For an oven complaint the technician sets a temperature and watches it with an independent thermometer while metering igniter or element current. For a cooktop complaint each burner and switch is tested in turn. That is how a weak igniter is separated from a sticking valve, and a drifted sensor from a failed board, without swapping parts on a hunch. We name the failed piece in plain words, write a single number, and go to work from the van on your approval. Ordered parts mean a booked return with no second trip fee. The oven is left at temperature, tested and tidy, with a written warranty.
Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele, JennAir, Bosch, KitchenAid, GE Café and Monogram, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Kenmore and Fisher & Paykel ranges, cooktops and wall ovens are everyday work on the peninsula. Inns and guest houses in the French Quarter and Ansonborough, and managers with College of Charleston and MUSC rentals, get turnover-day windows, lockbox access, approval by text and the invoice by email. Once you approve the written price, the $99 diagnostic is already within it; if you decline, $99 settles the visit. Every figure follows the diagnostic and is put in writing.
Stove, Range & Oven Repair questions from Downtown Charleston
Do you repair Wolf and Viking ranges in Downtown Charleston?
Yes. Pro-style gas ranges in South of Broad, Ansonborough, Harleston Village and the French Quarter are the most common high-end call we run. Igniters, spark modules, sensors, door hinges and valves are familiar, and we tell you which parts are on the van and which are ordered before you approve anything.
Why does my gas oven on the peninsula light so slowly?
The igniter is weakening. It still glows but no longer reaches the current that opens the valve, so the oven waits and lights late. Salt humidity from the harbor speeds this along on the lower peninsula and along East Bay. It is a same-visit repair on nearly every range.
Can you get to an inn kitchen before breakfast service?
We open at eight on weekdays and nine on Saturday, and an inn oven that failed overnight is a call we try to place first on the route. Give us a side-gate or kitchen-door code if the front desk is busy, and approve the repair by text so the technician does not have to wait on a manager.
Is it safe to keep using the cooktop while the oven is out?
Usually, provided there is no gas smell and nothing burning in the cavity; the two run on separate circuits inside the range. If you ever smell gas, shut the supply valve behind the range, open the piazza door and call the gas utility before anyone else.
How is an oven repair priced?
After the technician has metered the range, never before. The written number you approve already contains the $99 diagnostic; decline it and $99 closes the visit. Two peninsula ovens with the same symptom often have different faults, which is why we do not guess a figure over the phone.
